“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life. Every path leads homeward..” Hermann Hesse
This beautiful blue planet is home to over three trillion trees, yet 15 billion of them are being cut down every year.*. Our relationship with trees is biological and symbiotic. It is the reason why we breathe out what they breathe in. Including trees in this book is my infinitesimal way of thanking our green friends and to celebrate the reforestation effort around the world. It is not trees that we are saving for they have been here long before us, and they will continue to be there long after us. It is the future of humanity that is saved when we restore the balance of this tree-human relationship.

I am grateful for the two million trees that we have here in Singapore.... it is my sincere wish that you connect with each tree that has been carefully curated and woven into each 'shade' of my story. The next time you see a tree, I hope you do stop and ponder What could be the story of this tree?
The book is printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper. No certified wood supplier would take on our tiny project. However, we have opted to use Sengon plywood that comes from a plantation in Indonesia (not endangered forests or illegal sources). Plywood is often cited as one of the most environmentally-friendly because it is a natural product made from a renewable resource.
I hug trees because I love them. I love trees because they are such gentle generous givers. Trees breathe in what we breathe out. Their branches and leaves give us shade from the sun and shelter from the rain and wind. Their trunks build our homes and bridges. Their roots hold the soil together to prevent erosion and flooding. Their fruits and other plant parts give us food. They are a sight to behold and give us so much comfort and peace.
Together with a few fellow tree nymphs, Our Tree Stories is a groundup movement to get you to connect with trees, and all things green, through stories - to reclaim our lost love with nature. All efforts lead to more tree planted here and beyond. We are also the Singapore partner for Asian Tree of the Year.
